Ambassadors and Mentors 2022

The Department of Statistics is looking to recruit student ambassadors and mentors for the 2022-2023 academic year. This page sets outs the background, duties, responsibilities, skills and experience for each role.

Students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in University education in mathematical science subjects are important positive role models and are particularly encouraged to apply.

You can apply for both roles. If you wish to do this you will need to submit two applications.

Mentors

Department of Statistics Mentors form an essential part of the welcome new incoming students receive. Mentors share experiences, answer questions and support new students as they adjust to university life. Work for this position takes place at the start of the academic year.

Role. To advise new students about the workings of the university and department life, including answering questions, helping new students settle in and, where necessary, directing them to other sources of support.

Duties and responsibilities.

  1. Make contact with your mentees after they accept their offer to study at Warwick.
  2. To support your mentees during the first few weeks of the Autumn academic term. This will include communicating with them via Teams before they arrive, meeting them during Welcome Week and escorting them to the first Stats Café of the academic year.
  3. Share your experiences, thoughts, and ideas as relevant to your mentees.
  4. Answer questions and where necessary direct students to other sources of support and guidance.

Skills and experience.

  1. Hold or expect to obtain a good honours degree in MORSE, Mathematics and Statistics or Data Science degree.
  2. Ability to work individually or collaboratively with others.
  3. Ability to be a positive and inclusive role model for prospective and current students.
  4. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and team working with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  5. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  6. Ability to be fair, respectful, compassionate, and responsible.

Training will be provided.

Hours. You should expect to work approximately 7 hours in Term 1. This would include making contact with your mentees before Welcome Week, and meeting your mentees during Welcome Week. attending the first Stats Cafe of the year. You would also answer your mentees' questions.

Ambassadors

Department of Statistics Ambassadors play a critical role in working with the department on open days, offer holder days and also providing ad-hoc support to the deparrtment on student enhancement projects. Work for this position takes place over the whole academic year.

Role. Assisting the department on Open Days/offer holder open days, in department events, either by greeting prospective students or running group activities and working with departmental staff on student experience projects.

Duties and responsibilities.

  1. Liaising with prospective students and family, directing tours of campus, attending open days and offer holder day events.
  2. Supporting the department deliver Welcome Week events.
  3. Working in partnership with the department on student experience projects.

Skills and experience.

  1. Hold or expect to obtain a good honours degree in MORSE, Mathematics and Statistics or Data Science.
  2. Ability to work individually or collaboratively with others.
  3. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  4. Ability to take the initiative and work autonomously to solve problems.
  5. Ability to be a positive and inclusive role model for prospective and current students.
  6. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and team.

Training will be provided.

Hours. Working hours are typically Welcome Week, open days, and offer holder days. The department also makes requests for ambassador support for events such as module fairs, consultancy for student experience projects and help with other events. (A recent example would be the week-long Innovation 2022 for year 1 students.) Hours will be worked throughout the year.

Working Welcome Week. For those able to work during Welcome Week, there will be a training session in the week commencing 19th September. The date and time will be confirmed in September once the department knows ambassador availability. The number of hours of work during Welcome Week is flexible and we aim to balance workload across ambassadors.

Total work hours are determined by ambassador availability and the position in flexible in this regard. Some ambassadors work all events and hours, some a subset.

Right to work, employment and payment

There are certain right-to-work restrictions outlined below.

  1. You must be in the UK when you are working for either position. We cannot pay you for any work undertaken outside the UK.
  2. If you hold a visa then this visa may place restrictions on the number of hours you can work per week. This is usually 20 hours. It is your responsibility to check you can undertake this work and this will be checked by Unitemps before you can start work.

Before you can undertake either position, you must complete right-to-work checks with Unitemps.

The rate of pay is £12.74 per hour. This figure is based on rates currently posted by Unitemps and may be subject to minor amendments by Unitemps, but this will be the minimum rate. We do not anticipate any significant changes.
