Background Material

Purpose: Before delving into the topics of interest, we first need to revisit some of the key notation and definitions that are necessary to progress in this refresher.

Topics Covered: We cover important mathematical notation that will be used throughout this course. We then introduce the core ideas underlying probability that allow us to even approach solving difficult problems.

Intended Learning Outcomes: You should be comfortable with using and reading the notation given. You should have an idea what an experiment, outcome and event means in this context. You should understand how to calculate probability when all outcomes are equally likely. You should recall mutually exclusive events and the law of union for probability.
