This area is introduced under the research and seminar headings 'Chaos Communication Modelling' and 'Statistical Aspects of Chaos'. There are good opportunities to obtain a PhD in the area, by students with mathematics and statistics degrees and by students with mathematically strong engineering degrees. Several newly proposed chaos-based systems await theoretical assessment, having only been tentatively studied by simulation or by traditional arguments not exploiting their chaotic aspects. Further assessment of system efficiency, both involving bit error rates and outage rates is needed; the latter needs more fundamental development in the chaos communication setting. There would be opportunities to make research study visits to other international centres and in the middle and latter stages of the studentship to give overseas conference presentations at engineering meetings.
