Face Masks and Cultural Norms: An Expert Comment
Professor Helen Spencer-Oatey and Professor Perry Hinton have written two expert comment pieces looking at how mask-wearing became the norm in other cultures and consider what lessons this might have for the UK as we tackle the coronavirus.
The first piece examines ‘How does wearing a face mask become the cultural norm?’ looking at the East Asia context.
The second piece ‘Will face masks become the norm in Europe?’ looks at what factors may make mask-wearing a cultural norm in Europe and the UK.

Number 2 for Linguistics in the Times and Sunday Times 2020 League Table
Staff and students are celebrating as it was announced that we have been ranked 2 amongst UK Linguistics Departments in the Times and Sunday Times 2020 University League Table. Our new ranking puts the department just behind Oxford in this nationally recognised league table.
Professor Janet Holmes receives Hon DLitt
It gave us great pleasure that internationally acclaimed scholar, Professor Janet Holmes, was awarded an Hon DLitt (Honorary Doctor of Letters) at yesterday’s graduation ceremony. Not only is Janet an outstanding scholar in the field of Sociolinguistics, she has also always been very generous in sharing both her expertise and her time with students and colleagues during her time as Honorary Professor in the Centre for Applied Linguistics (2010-2018). We were thrilled that she received her award at the same ceremony as our graduating students.
