Getting to know other mentors
Hello,
I'm Louisa and this is my first experience mentoring a Warwick PGCEi student. I am in my 17th year of teaching and my current role is School Development Leader & Year 6 English lead teacher at St Andrews Samakee International School in Bangkok, Thailand. We are a DfE accredited BSO (British School Overseas) catering to Thai and expatriate children from 1-14 years old. I am currently the school's NQT mentor and work regularly with ESP (Education Success Partners) to run NQT courses.

Getting to know other mentors
Good afternoon - my name is Anthony and I'm a mentor on the iPGCE programme. I'm based at a 11-19 British bilingual school in Shanghai, China for Chinese students following an IGCSE/A-Level pathway. This is my second stint as a mentor under the revised Teaching Standards - I was a Schools Direct mentor during 2017/18 in London, UK for a MAT teaching school. Now I'm the sole mentor in my current school on the iPGCE pathway, supporting an experienced chemist become a stronger, qualified teacher, particularly at the 11-14 level which is a new experience for him. I'm enjoying the role (despite the sometimes challenging juggling of time) and the impact it's having on me as a teacher - encouraging me to reflect more on my own practice and strategies to engage and develop my students.

Hi, i’m Martine from a secondary faith school in Solihull. I have been a SM for the last 2 years with PGCE students. Having been in teaching for 17 years I find I learn a lot about teaching from my students. This is the first time i’ve had an SD placement and the first student from Warwick so looking forward to giving back as much as I can and gaining fresh inspiration at the same time.

Hi all, I am Gary and I work in a large International School in Singapore. We are looking to provide greater opportunities for PGCEi students to gain their teaching practice within our community. We see this as a win-win as it provides us the opportunity to provide support and expertise and we benefit from the knowledge and experiences that the student teachers bring to our community. I am enjoying having someone in my classes, learning from observing and providing feedback as well and practicing using cognitive coaching and as a tool to elicit reflective thinking from the student teacher about their teaching practice.

Hi all
I work as the lead mentor in the mathematics department in a small secondary school in Coventry. I thoroughly enjoy being involved in the development of our ITT's and NQT'S. It is a very rewarding role and helps develop my practice too!

Hi,
In honesty I am doing this because I was required to by my head of department and it is a responsibility commensurate with my pay scale. That said, we do of course need experienced staff to train new teachers.

Hi, I'm Rowan and I am the MFL mentor at Christopher Whitehead Language College & Sixth Form in Worcester. I have been a mentor before and I enjoyed working with the trainees and seeing them develop and grow into excellent classroom teachers. I also valued the opportunity to 'refresh' my teaching with some of their new ideas and approaches. So, when I was offered the opportunity of working with Warwick University, I signed up. I am passionate about language learning and the more excellent MFL teachers we can get, the better for our students!

Mentor training
Hello,
my name is Julie, I work in a 1 form Catholic primary which is part of a MAC. We have three students placed with us at the moment and as the students university mentor mentioned that there had been a few changes to the training at Warwick since I last attended I thought I would have a look and let class teachers know what is new.

Hi my name is Bev Hughes and I am the leader of RE at a secondary school in Coventry. I am coming towards the end of my career in teaching and understand the importance of encourages and supporting the next generation of teachers. Having students come with new ideas and enthusiasm also re-generates the department and makes you re-think your own teaching practises.

I am doing the mentoring because I enjoy seeing teachers progress and develop.
Also, the department is very busy so its difficult to find other people to mentor.

Hi
I'm Hazel Garwell. I've been teaching 28 years, 17 of them at Kineton High School. I have mentored several ITTs in previous years in maths/science, 2 of which are now successfully employed here. I will be mentoring a new physics teacher after Christmas. I have agreed to mentor because it is essential to nurture new talent within our profession & whilst by no means being a 'perfect' teacher, I feel I have some experience I can share.
