For home identified candidates your DBS will be processed through First Advantage. Once an applicant has accepted an offer, your details will be forward to First Advantage and you will be contacted by them asking you to complete the online application for DBS. Once this has been submitted, you will then be asked to attend a Post Office (where the service is available, usually a Post Office that can do Passport updates) to have your documentation verified and the fee paid, before being submitted to the DBS for the check to be completed. Please see here for full details on the process.
If you have signed up for the update service, following a previous check, we may be able to use this for the DBS check provided it meets the relevant levels as required (e.g. Enhanced DBS Check including the Children’s Barred List). If not you will need to complete a new check. Please check the Disclosures website for further information
For International candidate, you will be asked to send in the necessary documents for a DBS check at interview so that we can do a verification check with you during the interview day. School experienceLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window is important if you are interested in becoming a teacher. Where possible, it is recommended prior to your interview. We recommend that you spend time in a UK maintained school in Key Stage 3-5; ideally the focus of which should be on the teaching of your chosen subject. We do not require formal proof of school experience, but the school experience would support your knowledge of a classroom setting.
- The DfE also have online eventsLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window, and you may also find the TES New TeachersLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window website of use.
The DfE run a School Experience ProgrammeLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window (SEP) to help you gain school experience.
During the day you will be asked to undertake a comprehension task that will allow you to demonstrate your ability to write professionally and interpret school data. This task is designed to identify your support needs in literacy and numeracy.

The University of Warwick welcomes candidates with disabilities and under the Disability Discrimination Act those candidates who disclose their disability have the right to have reasonable adjustments made to enable them to train to teach. After your interview you will be formally contacted via email regarding the outcome of your application. As this has to go through some further checks, this can be approximately 7 working days from your interview.
Please be aware that a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course may be deemed necessary at interview. A Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) programme is ideal for applicants who may not have enough specific subject knowledge to begin their chosen PGCE. It is designed to help you gain in-depth knowledge needed to train in your chosen subject.
The University of Warwick does not deliver SKE programmes, therefore applicants will need to approach other suppliers, a list of which is available through the Department for Education. Some providers do offer distance learning options. We would also recommend The Polesworth SchoolLink opens in a new windowLink opens in a new window as a provider of high quality SKEs. It will be assessed at interview whether you are to be recommended an SKE.
You may be able to receive funding for your SKE, as well as a bursary while you complete it - please speak to the providing institution for more information.
Please ensure that you have read the information at https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/cte/start-teaching/international
