Sonia Bhalotra - EEA Women in Economics Committee

Professor Sonia Bhalotra has been invited to join the European Economic Association’s Women in Economics Committee.

The European Economic Association (EEA) promotes the development of economic science throughout Europe. Its Women in Economics Committee aims to support women in the economics profession by providing a forum for discussion of issues relevant to female economists, facilitating networks and circulating information.

Athena Swan Bronze Award for the Department of Economics

We are delighted to announce that the Department of Economics has achieved a Bronze Award from the Athena Swan Charter in recognition of our commitment to gender equality.

Lamfalussy Research Fellowship - Call for Projects

The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking applications from promising young researchers for up to five Lamfalussy Fellowships in 2022. The Lamfalussy Fellowship programme was launched in 2003 and aims to promote high-quality research on the structure, integration and performance of the European financial system

Applications should be sent by email to lamfalussy dot fellowships at ecb dot europa dot eu no later than 31 January 2022 (before 24:00 CET). To further enhance diversity, the ECB particularly encourages applications from female candidates. The selection committee aims to award five fellowships by April 2022.

Economics PhD Conference

The two-day conference organised by Warwick Economics PhD students will bring together international PhD research from across the globe.

The 10th annual Warwick Economics PhD Conference will be held in person at the premises of the University, and it will be live-streamed to enable remote participation.

CEPR/Warwick/Princeton/Utah Polecon Conference 2022

The Department of Economics at the University of Warwick along with the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), the Department of Politics at Princeton University, the Department of Finance at University of Utah and the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance (EIEF) are organising a conference on Political Economy in Rome, Italy, in March 2022.

The aim of the conference is to bring together the top theoretical and empirical political scientists and economists across Europe and North America.

Atisha Ghosh has given birth to twin boys; Aadrit and Archit were born on 30 November 2021. Both boys are doing well!

Walk with colleagues

Join us for a short 20 minute walk - Monday to Friday at 12.00pm. If you are in the Department and fancy a breath of fresh air during an early lunch break, come for a walk and a chat along the way. Be at Colin’s office (S2.130) by 12.00pm.

Departmental HR Update


Health and Wellbeing

Good health and wellbeing is paramount for staff at all times, but more especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The University offers a range of remote sessions dedicated to improving our wellbeing. We encourage as many of you as possible to explore any one of these opportunities.

Report and Support

Since its introduction, the University Report and Support scheme has been utilised by staff and students to report incidences of bullying/harassment, sexual misconduct, hate crime and discrimination. The University has analysed have produced the first Annual Report which shows that there has been significant use of the system by students and a smaller number of staff since the introduction of the scheme.

Conference Support Award

The University has reinstated the Conference Support Award Scheme. The Conference/Training Support Award scheme provides up to £200 to help cover the additional caring costs that individuals incur in order to attend a conference/training session or similar event. Details of the scheme and application form are available here. Applications should be forwarded to Lisa Hayes, HR Officer in the first instance.

Publications, Presentations & Workshops


Sonia Bhalotra recently presented her research at the AEA Meetings, CEMFI Madrid, University of Pittsburgh, Santa Barbara, Carleton and Oxford.

Sonia Bhalotra is an invited speaker at a World Bank event on gender inequality and son preference. Sonia is also an invited speaker on a panel on Socioeconomic determinants of health at Ashoka University, Delhi.

Sascha Becker has been recently appointed as Editorial Board member of the Journal of Economic History.

Stefania Paredes Fuentes has been appointed as an Associate for the Centre for Teaching and Learning Economics (CTaLE) at UCL.
