On 14 August 2026, Kathryn McMahon (Warwick) and Mel Marquis (Monash), together with PhD researchers, Robin Vandendriessche (Warwick) and Anna Moskal (Monash), convened a Workshop on ‘Digital Regulation & Competition in the EU, the UK, Australia & other jurisdictions’.

The event was funded by the Monash Warwick AllianceLink opens in a new window and took place at the Monash Law Chambers, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Twenty-five workshop participants including academic experts, government policy advisors, regulators, and students debated how various jurisdictions respond or should respond to competition challenges posed by the rise of global digital platforms, the accumulation of data and abuse of market power. With reference to the EU, the UK, South Africa, South Korea, Japan and other jurisdictions, the participants commented on the Australian Treasury’s proposal for a 'new digital competition regime’. They debated the merits of such a regime as well as its interaction with other policies, and identified a variety of design features that would support its effective implementation.

The Workshop featured 14 speakers including Jason McDonald (First Assistant Secretary, Competition and Consumer Policy Division, Australian Treasury), David Abkiewicz (General Manager, Digital Markets Branch, Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC)), Dr Friso Bostoen (Tilburg University, Netherlands), Professor Caroline Buts, (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium), Dr Gunn Jiravuttipong (University of California, Berkeley, USA), Dr Sangyun Lee (Visiting Fellow, Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan), Professor Sei Shishido (Seikei University, Tokyo, Japan), Professor Deborah Healey (University of New South Wales, Australia) and Dr Rhonda Smith (University of Melbourne, Australia).
