Coventry Peace Festival and EASG @ PAIS - 4th November 2025 - Reconciliation in East Aisa

The East Asia Study Group (EASG), part of the department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at the University of Warwick is pleased to host a public roundtable as part of the Coventry Peace Festival 2025.

Peace without Reconciliation: Lessons from East Asia

Time: 6:15PM - 8:00PM

Date: Tuesday 4th November 2025

Venue: The Oculus, University of Warwick

A panel of experts on East Asia, a region with a notorious “history problem”, from a range of UK universities will unpack the politics of the recent World War Two commemorations. Drawing on examples like Hiroshima, they will show how national politics have intertwined with national memories used for political ends, creating obstacles to reconciliation as nations clash over opposing interpretations of history. The event illustrates the inescapable politics of reconciliation, showing that a fundamental ingredient for reconciliation is political leadership; and that peace without reconciliation is not sustainable. Following the initial discussion, there will be a Q & A where members of the audience will be invited to ask questions. Light snacks, sandwiches, tea and coffee will be provided before the event.

The University of Warwick’s East Asia Study Group explores the politics and international relations of East Asia, focusing on the region’s unique challenges to traditional global theories.

We ask questions like:

  • Why does Japan limit its military role despite its economic power?
  • How has China thrived without embracing liberal market principles?
  • Why does ASEAN prioritise national sovereignty over regional integration?

Through talks and research, EASG brings together scholars to deepen understanding of East Asia and rethink global theories. We welcome contributions that support curriculum decolonisation and broaden perspectives on international relations.
