My research sits at the intersection of violent political conflict and peacebuilding. I have expertise in the broad field of conflict analysis with a specific interest in mediation and negotiation, the processes of conflict transformation and power sharing systems within deeply divided societies. My main empirical interest is in Northern Ireland and peacebuilding efforts that have been undertaken there since the early 1990s. I have published 12 books and numerous journal articles on these themes over the last 30 years and am a regular contributor to media coverage of issues within deeply divided societies.
My role within Politics and International Studies involves working with colleagues on the Inclusive Peace project funded by an Open Research Area (ORA7) grant in collaboration with the ESRC (UK), SSHRC (Canada), ANR (France/New Caledonia) and JSPS (Japan).
Before being appointed to this role at Warwick in May 2024, I have held academic positions at the University of Kent, Lancaster University, Ulster University and Queen's Belfast.
A paperback of my latest book, Belfast: The Story of a City and Its People, was published by Yale University Press in May 2024.
