Room E2.15

My research and teaching focuses on citizens and political institution building within violently divided societies, forced migration studies and the study of displaced and migrant communities. I have been awarded an ERC advanced grant PEACERETURN that focuses on the study of peaceful voluntary return and durable solutions to displacement. I also currently lead the Inclusive Peace project funded by an Open Research Area (ORA7) in collaboration with the ESRC (UK), SSHRC (Canada), ANR (France/New Caledonia) and JSPS (Japan). As part of outreach engagements, I have developed interactive mediations and negotiations training programs delivered in partnership with several universities, NGOs and international organizations such as the Organization of American States providing training to more than 120 diplomats from 25 countries. I have also served as a consultant to various governments and international organizations including the Council of Europe and have contributed commentaries to international media such as the Guardian, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

I have authored several books and more than fifty academic articles and book chapters in the areas of forced displacement, nationalism and conflict regulation in deeply divided societies My most recently completed project funded by the US Institute of Peace focused on the study of conflict resolution designs that flow from the integration of citizen preferences and the broader public. This project combined qualitative research with conjoint experiments to identify zones of possible agreement in Cyprus and in Northern Ireland and to understand the impact of trade-offs and concessions in the overall public opinion.

Before joining PAIS, I taught at the University of Kent where I directed the Conflict Analysis Research Centre (CARC), Queen’s University Belfast and Princeton University. I also held fellowships at the University of Essex, the University of Pennsylvania (Solomon Asch Centre), the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and I am currently an honorary Professor at the University of Kent and a Senior Advisor at the Forum of Federations, Ottawa. My vision at PAIS, includes supporting multi-disciplinary research applied to real-world situations including collaborative work in the areas of constitutional design and international conflict resolution as well as setting new standards in professional mediations training.
