V700 Philosophy (Single Honours)

In each year of study, students are required to take exactly 120 CATS of modules. The specific requirements for each year of study are set out below.

First Year:

Students taking Philosophy (V700) will be required to take the following 15-CAT core required modules in their first year:

PH136 Logic 1: Introduction to Symbolic Logic (Spring Term)
PH140 Ancient Philosophy (Spring Term)

Each of the above modules is core required and must therefore be passed individually in order to meet the criteria to progress into the second year of study.

In addition to the core modules, students are required to take 30 CATS of optional modules. We recommend selecting one of the following 15 CAT Philosophy modules from each term:
PH107 Problems in Philosophy and Literature (Autumn Term)

Second Year

Students taking Philosophy (V700) will be required to take the following core module in their second year:
PH201 History of Modern Philosophy (Full Year) - 30 CATS

Students should then select optional modules comprising 90 CATS, of which a minimum of 60 CATS must be from the Philosophy Department. Optional modules run by the Philosophy department can be viewed here.

Students may also choose to take modules totalling up to 30 CATS from another department if they wish.*

Final Year

In the final year, there are no core modules. Students should select optional modules totalling 120 CATS of which at least 90 CATS should come from the Philosophy Department. The remaining 30 CATS may come from other departments if you wish.*

Students may choose to take the PH313 Dissertation or PH353 Independent Project module in the final year, but this not required.

*Permission to take modules outside of the Philosophy Department must be sought from the Department offering the module before you register for it on eVision. Details of how and when to sign up for external modules can usually be found on that Department's website. If in doubt please contact the Department's Undergraduate Office who will be able to advise you of their sign up processes.

Students on the Philosophy with Intercalated Year (V701) or Philosophy with Work Placement (V702) courses follow the course as set out above, spending the third year on a year abroad or work placement.
