VQ52 Philosophy, Literature and Classics
First Year
In your first year, you must take a set of compulsory core modules. The core first-year modules are:
- PH107 Problems in Philosophy and Literature (jointly taught by Philosophy and English in Autumn Term, 15 CATS)

PH134 Introduction to Philosophy (without Logic) (Full Year, 30 CATS)
In addition, students are required to select one optional core module from the English Department:
- EN101 Epic into Novel (Full Year, 30 CATS)
- EN122 Modes of Reading (Full Year, 30 CATS)
And optional core modules from the Classics Department totalling 30 CATS:
Either CX120 Greek Language 1 |
And CX113 Encounters with Greek Texts |
Or CX136 Latin Literary Texts |
Students should be aware that some Classics modules have prerequisites. Please check the relevant module pages or contact classics@warwick.ac.uk for details.
In addition, students must select one additional 15 CAT module from either Philosophy, English or Classics.
Second Year
In your second year you must take the following core module:
- PH201 History of Modern Philosophy (30 CATS)
You should then select options distributed in the following way:
- Options at Honours level in English (30 CATS)
- Options at CX2** level in Classics (30 CATS)
Normally remaining 30 CATS can be taken from any of three joint Departments. However, students may instead opt to take up to 30 CATS of any modules available in Modern Languages, Arts, or Social Sciences Departments in one of Years 2 or 3.
Final Year
In your final year there are no core modules.
You should normally select options distributed in the following way:
- Options at Honours level in English (at least 30 CATS)
- Options at Honours level in Philosophy (at least 30 CATS)
- Options at CX3** level in Classics (at least 30 CATS)
If not already done so in Year 2, students may opt to take up to 30 CATS of any modules available in Modern Languages, Arts, or Social Sciences Departments in place of an optional module from one of the Departments listed above.
In their final year, students may wish to consider taking the following co-supervised modules:
- PH385 Philosophy and Literature Dissertation (30 CATS)
- PH386 Philosophy and Literature Independent Project (15 CATS)
Students may also wish to take PH384 Topics in Philosophy and Literature as an optional module in years 2 or 3 (not running in 2022-23).
