Meet Education Policy and Quality - Eleanor Sanger

What is your role and what are you responsible for?

I'm the Digital Resources Officer in EPQ, responsible for communicating the team's work across the University and looking after our published information.

How long have you worked at Warwick, and what did you do before that?

I started working at Warwick when I joined EPQ in August 2022. Prior to that, I'd had a sojourn at a farming charity delivering farm safety and mental health training to young farmers, but other than that my work has always been focused around communications. I spent four years working in comms roles at two of the Oxford colleges, did an internship working on volunteer communications at a local National Trust property, and worked on marketing campaigns at a digital agency in Paris.

What projects are you currently working on, and what's coming up?

My role is very varied, and I get to work on so many projects across the team. At the minute I'm involved in the development of the new Education and Student Experience Strategy, the Academic Governance Review, and supporting colleagues across EPQ with their projects' communications needs. And, of course, I put together the Education Bulletin each month!

What does a typical day look like?

I'll start by going through my emails and ticking off some of the smaller items from my to-do list, and then reward myself with a large cup of tea. I might have meetings with EPQ colleagues, or with teams from other parts of the University, and then in the afternoon I'll knuckle down to some of the bigger tasks on my list.

What's your favourite thing about your role?

I love being able to use so many different skills as well as developing lots of new ones, and EPQ is a lovely team to work in - everyone is so kind and helpful.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I always have a book on the go, so you'll probably find me either reading or heading to the library. I also love watching films and have very eclectic taste, so it's fun finding new things to watch. Music has always been a big part of my life - these days I sing in a choir and, for reasons unknown to anyone (including myself), I recently decided to try and learn the violin, for which I apologise to anyone who happens to live within earshot.

What is your favourite book, and your favourite film?

It is far too difficult to choose. But if you're forcing me (and I wrote these questions, so, past Eleanor, thank you for including this one...), I'd probably have to go for The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton, just because of how gripping and utterly mind-bending it was. My favourite film really depends on my mood, but The Shawshank Redemption and the Lord of the Rings films (extended editions, obviously) are all pretty epic.

If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?

I was born in Yorkshire and am slightly in love with the Yorkshire Dales, so I'd have to take myself there. I'd have a walk on the fells, spend several hours enjoying the incredible scenery, and then install myself in a proper pub with a pint of stout and a steak and ale pie.

Cats or dogs? Tea or coffee? City or countryside?

Always cats - I quite like the fact they make it clear that you are in fact owned by them. I am powered by Yorkshire Tea, and I'd probably have to go for the countryside, as long as I still have easy access to a bookshop.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Spend less time writing essays and more time trying new things. Once you've worked out the things you love doing, devote as much time to them as possible. Spoiler alert: 19th-century French literature is not one of those things.
