Meet Education Policy and Quality - Ewan Mellor

What is your role, and what are you responsible for?

My job title is Quality and Partnerships Development Manager. I'm responsible for the quality assurance processes for academic partnerships, including degree apprenticeships, and for supporting our strategic partnership with University College Birmingham.

How long have you worked at Warwick, and what did you do before that?

I started at Warwick in May, so just over six months! Prior to that, I worked at Arden University.

What projects are you currently working on, and what's coming up?

I've just completed a review of our governance structures for degree apprenticeships, and we are expecting an Ofsted visit for our apprenticeship provision in a year's time, so I'm heavily involved with ensuring we're ready for that.

What does a typical day look like?

My days are quite varied, but usually involve a combination of meetings (formal committees, regular catch-ups, and ad hoc meetings and calls with colleagues), responding to emails, and reading documents. Every few weeks, I have a day in Birmingham meeting colleagues at University College Birmingham.

What's your favourite thing about your role?

I get to work with a wonderful team in EPQ, but also work with great colleagues more widely across the University, and with our partners. This means I have a lot of variety and opportunity to learn, as well as opportunities to work collaboratively to solve problems and improve the way we do things.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love cooking, and food in general - and I have two boys, aged 5 and 2, who keep me busy!

What is your favourite book, and your favourite film?

One of my favourite authors is Albert Camus. The Fall and The Outsider are brilliant, but The Plague is my favourite. However, my single favourite book is Vladimir Nabokov's collection of short stories, due to the sheer variety of themes and the way he plays with ambiguity and the relationship between fantasy and reality. My favourite film is The Lives of Others.

If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?

The Platypus Bush Camp in Queensland, Australia.

Cats or dogs? Tea or coffee? City or countryside?

Cats, coffee (double espresso with two sugars), and I like both the city and the countryside.

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

That sometimes it's worth listening to advice - but my 18-year-old self probably definitely wouldn't take it!
