Meet Education Policy and Quality - Michelle Kitchen

What is your role and what are you responsible for?

I work as a Project Officer on the Institutional Teaching and Learning Review (ITLR). I’m responsible for the logistics and scheduling of the review meetings, supporting the external reviewers on the project, and ensuring review panel members have access to all the resources and information they need. I also act as Secretary on a couple of the ITLR panels.

How long have you worked at Warwick, and what did you do before that?

I’ve been working at Warwick for a year this month. I started in the Awards and Ceremonies Team last summer, supporting the catch-up degree ceremonies that were postponed due to the pandemic, but then I moved to Education Policy and Quality to provide project support on TEF and the ITLR. I’ve returned to work after a career break, but previously I worked in the public sector managing projects focused on the use of technology and digital content in the schools and learning and skills sectors. I’m a qualified librarian and have also previously worked as a web editor.

What does a typical day look like?

I spend a chunk of my day sending and responding to emails – as so many people across the University are involved in the ITLR there is plenty of communication required. I’m also in and out of spreadsheets all day long, managing and tracking progress with reviews.

What’s your favourite thing about your role?

I’m really enjoying getting to know more about the University and the departments within it. ITLR is the perfect project for learning about how all parts of Warwick relate to one another. The people I’m working with are also a favourite thing about the role – everyone in the team is so supportive of one another, which is great.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

My garden is my ‘happy place’, and I find it very relaxing digging up the weeds (of which there is a never-ending supply!). I also enjoy walks around the back of Kenilworth Castle and spending time with my family on days out.

What is your favourite book, and your favourite film?

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, for the book and the film. Although I do also love ‘Home Alone’ at Christmas.

If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?

Argentina – I’ve never been to South America and it’s definitely top of my list of places to go. I’d love to see the Iguazu Falls up close.

Cats or dogs? Tea or coffee? City or countryside?

Definitely cats! I have two cats, who we adopted eight years ago. They’re so unpredictable, hilarious and affectionate (when they want to be). It has to be tea – Rooibos, or occasionally an Earl Grey. I’ve only ever had about two cups of coffee in my entire life! I prefer the countryside over the city, although I do like to visit the city every now and then to see a show at the theatre.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers. If you have the questions then you’re halfway there.
