Marking and Assessment Boycott (MAB) - clearing the backlog

As we start a new term, this provides an opportunity to recognise that we have now passed significant milestones in clearing the Marking and Assessment Boycott (MAB) backlog.

  • The backlog of marking has been cleared.
  • Results were published to all students before Christmas.
  • With just over 1800 classification decisions reviewed by Boards of Examiners last term, finalists' classifications and HEARs were published on 11 January.
  • Postgraduate Taught students were awarded on time.
  • Winter graduation ceremonies were held as planned last week.

Moving forwards, then next phase of MAB recovery work will support:

  • Non-finalist Boards of Examiners, which are due to be completed with module marks agreed by the end of this month.
  • Work to engage with students who progressed with compensated passes.
  • Systems work and support resources for Summer 2024 Boards of Examiners, which are currently in development.

Another key aspect of this phase of work is 'lessons learned'. We will be reaching out this month for reflections on the lessons learned through MAB recovery, and to consider how we might improve resilience and readiness for the future. We will bring those reflections and emerging recommendations back to colleagues via the Education Bulletin and faculty meetings later this term.

Work to minimise the impact of the MAB on students has been a significant endeavour, which has drawn heavily on the goodwill and resilience of staff, particularly those in Departments most impacted. Thank you again for your contribution to these collective efforts.
