Meet Education Policy and Quality - Lauren Baker

What is your role and what are you responsible for?

My role is Head of Education Quality and Partnerships, which I started in January 2023 having previously been the Quality and Partnerships Development Manager in EPQ. I'm responsible for leading the development and implementation of a Quality Framework for the University. I also lead the Quality and Partnerships team, which has expertise in quality review and enhancement, quality assurance, and academic partnerships.

How long have you worked at Warwick, and what did you do before that?

I've been at Warwick since the end of 2018, and before that I lived in London and worked for the University of Westminster for about eight years. During my time there I worked in three faculties in student-facing roles, but ended up managing two large-scale institutional partnerships in Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka as the Academic Partnerships Manager.

What projects are you currently working on, and what's coming up?

Alongside Si Bullock, I'm currently working on the development of the Quality Framework, which is intended to be a point of reference for all quality assurance and enhancement activity across the University. We're working to align closely to the reform of the University's Academic Regulations, which is also currently underway in EPQ. The Quality and Partnerships team is working on several large-scale ongoing projects including Curriculum Management and Curriculum Development, which will have a knock-on effect on lots of other areas. We'll also be focusing on review in a post-ITLR world... So, lots to think about!

What does a typical day look like?

I usually start early to get through emails and have some focused time before meetings start at around 8 or 9. If I'm in the office, I'll try my hardest to find time to take a walk across campus (often to Pret!).

What's your favourite thing about your role?

I really love working with different people. I'm lucky that I get to work with some of our lovely partners, such as University College Birmingham, and the team that I work in is brilliant. I don't think the EPQ team at all conform to the slightly stuffy stereotype of Quality people - they're all warm, friendly people and we really look out for one another.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I have two young girls - Esme and Iris - and love the time that I spend with them. When I'm not doing that, I spend as much time as I can with friends. I'm a big fan of Mexican and Indian food, so going out for dinner with friends when I get the chance is a treat.

What is your favourite book, and your favourite film?

My favourite book is Any Human Heart by William Boyd, and my favourite film is What We Do in the Shadows. There's a new(ish) TV series based on the film, which I really need to watch!

If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?

It would definitely be somewhere hot - probably a beach in Colombia. They have incredible beaches, and the people are lovely.

Cats or dogs? Tea or coffee? City or countryside?

I'm a cat and a dog person - I've grown up more with cats than dogs, but would love to own a dog soon. Probably coffee, although that's also a close one. I'm definitely more of a city person - I like the countryside, but for visits rather than a place to live.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

To look after yourself and not to care too much about what other people think. There will always be people that you can't please, and that's ok - focus on the ones that are important.
