Phil Young

Can you please state your name and your role in ITLR?

My name is Phil Young. I'm a professor in the School of Life Sciences and I am the workstream lead in charge of training for ITLR. And I also am the Deputy Chair the Advisory Group.

How has your role in the university contributed to discussions in the panel?

So, within the university itself, within the Department of Life Sciences, I'm the Director of Education Analytics, which means I play a central role in analysing student attainment data and award data, which formed the majority of our bespoke theme. So through my day-to-day analysis of data, understanding of student outcomes and understanding how our provision is impacting our students, its allowed me to drive the bespoke theme and contribute to that discussion.

What's been a highlight of the ITLR for you?

I think for me personally, one of the highlights has been sharing best practice both from a department point of view and from other departments as well.

So being able to talk to people about the attainment analysis we're doing and the new programs we're introducing to support students was a phenomenal experience which we got really positive feedback from, but also here in other departments positive sort of experiences and best practice. I know personally from the panel I've sat on, I've had maybe three or four pieces of advice on what other people are doing that I think we're actually going to start using it.

What advice would you give to a colleague that said they were going to take part in the ITLR in their own institution?

So colleagues who were going to take part in ITLR, who were thinking of doing that, my main piece of advice was would be to just go for it. Its a positive experience.
You get to have a valuable insight into what other departments are doing. One of the core things we have to do at Warwick, and what I think is one of the best things about Warwick is the collegiate sort of environment. And you get to see the best of Warwick, basically. You get to speak to people, you get to help colleagues and its really worthwhile.
