High-Performance Scientific Computing (HPSC) Data Centre
High-Performance Scientific Computing (HPSC) Data Centre
The University of Warwick is developing a new High-Performance Scientific Computing (HPSC) Data Centre to support world-leading research, innovation and digital capability across the University.
High-Performance Scientific Computing is critical to research at Warwick, enabling advanced simulations, modelling and data analysis across a wide range of disciplines. The University's current high-performance computing platform operates at near-full capacity throughout the year and is housed within an ageing data centre in the Physical Sciences Building. With the building scheduled for demolition as part of the STEM-Connect programme, a new facility is required to ensure continuity of service and support future growth.
The proposed development will provide a modern, resilient and scalable data centre capable of supporting the University's growing computational research needs. The facility will initially deliver around 1MW of computing capacity, with the potential to expand as demand increases over time.
The new data centre will be located adjacent to the Academic Loop Road, between the Psychology Building and the Degree Apprenticeship Centre.
The project brings together a broad range of stakeholders from across the University to develop a solution that meets current needs while providing flexibility for future expansion.
By investing in this critical research infrastructure, the University will safeguard existing computational capabilities while enabling the next generation of research, innovation and collaboration.
Key Design Considerations
The project team is working to deliver a highly resilient, efficient and future-proof facility. Key design considerations include:
- Heat management and energy efficiency - High-performance computing equipment generates significantly more heat than conventional IT infrastructure. The facility will incorporate advanced cooling technologies to manage thermal loads efficiently while supporting the University's sustainability ambitions.
- Service resilience and reliability - The HPSC environment supports mission-critical research activities across the University. The facility is therefore being designed with resilient infrastructure systems and appropriate levels of redundancy to maintain operation during maintenance activities and minimise the risk of service disruption.
- Electrical infrastructure and future capacity - High-performance computing requires substantial electrical power. The project is assessing long-term power requirements and utility infrastructure to ensure the facility can support both the initial 1MW deployment and future expansion.
- Future scalability - The development is being designed to accommodate future growth in computational demand, ensuring Warwick's research community can access the computing capability required for emerging technologies, data-intensive research and artificial intelligence applications.
