Notes on Thunderbird

A set up utility is provided that will configure Thunderbird for use with your University email via IMAPS. This utility is automatically run instead of Thunderbird if no existing Thunderbird configuration is found in your home directory.

This utility will set up Thunderbird with the following notable default settings:

  • Copies of messages you send will be saved in the Sent Items folder in your University email account. This is the same folder in which Outlook Web App and Outlook store copies of message you send.
  • Copies of message you delete will be moved to the Deleted Items folder in your University email account. This is the same folder to which Outlook Web App and Outlook move messages you delete.
  • Draft messages will be saved in the Drafts folder in your University email account. This is the same folder in which Outlook Web App and Outlook store copies of draft messages.
  • Messages Thunderbird thinks are spam will be moved to the Junk E-Mail folder in your University email account. This is the same folder to which Outlook Web App and Outlook move messages they think are spam.
  • The spam filter is set to automatically trust the flagging of messages set by SpamAssassin which is used on the University mail relays.
  • Messages in the Junk E-Mail folder more than fourteen days old will be deleted.
  • Messages will be sent as plain text only. (If you wish to send a HTML formatted message hold down Shift whilst clicking the Write button. HTML formatted can be enabled for all messages you send in Edit > Account Settings > Exchange > Composing & Addressing)
  • Requests for read receipts will be ignored. (A read receipt is when the sender of message is notified that you have opened it.)
  • Messages will be spell checked before they are sent.
  • The Address Book contains an entry for the University LDAP server.
  • Typing a surname in the To field when composing a message will automatically look up that name in the University LDAP server.

You may not see all your mail folders on the University email by default. If this is the case, you will need to subscribe to them. Right click on the where your email address appears in bold in the left hand pane, then select subscribe from the context menu.
