IFSTAL Talk 'Responses to food insecurity' - by Dr Lopa Saxena and Wendy Eades

- Export as iCalendar
Location: OC1.01, The Oculus

Food insecurity in the UK has become the subject of increasing concern over the past 5-7 years, sparking much discussion and debate in Parliament and beyond. The exponential growth and normalisation of food banks has prompted academic debate, but they are not the only response to food insecurity. This seminar will explore the role of food banks and other food aid provision and the issues around them. Lopa will share findings from her recent British Academy funded research 'Austerity Retail in Britain,’ which looks at the emergence of social supermarkets as a response to food insecurity and examines the different types of ‘austerity retail’ that have developed across the UK - including a future project in Coventry.

Dr Lopamudra Patnaik Saxena is a Research Associate at the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience, Coventry University. Her current research addresses food and communities, including: food justice and food sovereignty; resilient food systems; food governance; food waste and food poverty; the role of community food growing and gardening in promoting health and well-being; and, impact of local and agroecological enterprises on sustainable and just growth.

Wendy Eades is a final year PhD student at Warwick Law School. Her PhD Thesis is titled 'Investigating the Impact of Welfare Reform'
