Dr Rosie Bellamy

Head of Research Integrity and Quality Assurance

We're one of the few teams who see work from all departments and all faculties. It's so interesting and the breadth of research that we get to see is amazing.

I've recently started a new role as Head of Research Integrity and Quality Assurance - it’s a brand-new role, never been done before so I’m going to really be able to make the job my own.

In the role I’m going to be improving the Research Integrity training provision and making sure that people are aware that it is mandatory for everyone involved in research.

We’ll offer in-person training across the university for researchers and students as well.

I'll also be setting up some quality assurance provisions across areas such as research ethics, trusted research and the Human Tissue Act.

Prior to starting my new role, I'd been mainly looking after the research ethics committees at the university, so that's BSREC and HSSREC.

They review all research involving human participants, their data or tissue. Any research which falls into that category, for example if a researcher wants to do an interview, send out a survey or collect samples, they will need to have ethical approval in place before conducting that work.

Beyond the books: Finding purpose in research support

I completed my PhD at the University of Birmingham in comparative literature.

After that, I wanted to gain some experience outside of academia so went to work in an art gallery in Solihull.

While I enjoyed it, I wanted to put my PhD to good use. I knew that a career conducting research wasn’t for me so when I learned about Professional Services, it seemed like the perfect fit!

I love supporting research and seeing all the incredible things that academics are doing here at Warwick.

When I started as a Research Governance Officer in 2018, I didn't have much experience of research ethics.

It’s not so prevalent in the Arts but this means that when I speak to researchers who are not familiar with the processes and requirements, I can really empathise.

I then progressed to the role of Research Governance and Quality Assurance Manager, taking on oversight of BSREC - the committee for Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

These were disciplines I hadn’t worked with before, but it was a privilege to learn about different research methods and challenges in these fields.

One of the things I enjoy the most about working at Warwick is the wide range of exciting and important research which I get to see.

Teamwork and collaboration

Another great thing about my job is the Research Governance team I work with - they are incredibly hardworking and committed, and they genuinely want to help people.

I feel privileged to be part of a team that is not only knowledgeable and professional but also deeply collaborative.

They consistently go above and beyond to work with academics and are always striving to do their very best.

What’s my life outside of the University?

I've got two little boys who are full of energy so I take every opportunity to get out in the countryside where they can run free! I love gardening, getting muddy hands and growing things. Aside from that, I’m a big fan of rock music and will never miss Alice Cooper when he comes to the UK!
