Changes to UKRI policies to support financial sustainability and updates to grant terms and conditions

In response to reviews of the financial sustainability of the UK research funding system, UKRI has updated its funding policiesLink opens in a new window. They have taken a three-prong approach to tackle equipment cost recovery, price threshold for capital equipment, and that institutional matched funding is not expected or necessary.

With some exceptions, all equipment will be funded at 80% of the full economic cost. Exceptions include instrument development awards, equipment for partners in DAC listed countries, and fully-funded equipment on specific infrastructure calls.

UKRI have made it clear that the default position is that there is no expectation for matched funding on research grant applications meaning that Warwick will seek to recover all eligible costs on its research activity. Assessors on panels have also been advised of this change and that it should not form the basis of funding decisions. If UKRI require match contributions for certain calls, this will be clearly stated within the call guidance.

Terms and conditions:

UKRI have made several changes to their standard terms and conditions for research grants which are detailed hereLink opens in a new window. Several updates have been made to reflect changes to legislation and codes of practice and to ensure consistency of language throughout.

Finally, a new term is added which requires reference to the support from UKRI in all public communications, such as press releases, media appearances, social media and conferences. This must include the grant reference number and “prominent reference” to UKRI or the relevant council.
