University Ethical Principles

The University is mindful that certain areas of research may require greater scrutiny to ensure that it does not inadvertently undertake research which is unethical or has a negative impact. This is taken into consideration as part of the R&IS due diligence review process, and there are ethical principles by which the University conducts its research:

·Defence – we will not conduct research activities relating to the creation of offensive weapons for military use, and will not engage with organisations subject to UK sanctions or associated with human rights violations. We will work with the defence sector where this is not in conflict with this principle.

·Fossil Fuels – we will not work with companies or organisations which aim to extract or refine fossil fuels. Exceptions may be made for projects supporting a shift towards sustainability and renewable sources.

·Gambling – we will not endorse, promote or increase gambling or betting activity with our research work. We will look to remedy or alleviate the harm inflicted by the industry and will accept funding from the National Lottery to enhance the UK’s sports and culture offering.

·Tobacco – we will not work with organisations that develop, produce, market or sell tobacco or tobacco products. An exception may be made for projects which seek to reduce or eliminate the use of tobacco.

·Research involving human participants or animals – research involving human participants, their data or tissue must obtain the appropriate ethical approvals. Any research involving animals will be scrutinised carefully, and ethical approval will be required. The University seeks to reduce the use of animals in research.
