What is research integrity and why does it matter?
Research integrity is an essential part of research. It gives confidence to others, including the public, that the methods and results of research are reliable, credible and trustworthy.
What research integrity training is available to me?
The University provides free-at-the-point-of-use access to a dedicated online Research Integrity Training Programme, ‘Epigeum’.
Two versions of the training are available: A refresher version and a full version.
All staff and students delivering research are required to complete Research Integrity Training - those with prior knowledge, experience and understanding can complete the Refresher version of the Epigeum training. All three modules should be completed.
This version gives an opportunity to check knowledge and understanding of research integrity and to review key information on responsible research conduct. It also provides information on updates to UK policies and global developments that are relevant to research integrity. The three modules take about an hour to complete.
Staff and students delivering research may find the full version of the Epigeum Training Programme useful. It is recommended that PGRs and early career researchers complete the core modules of the full version of the training.
This version provides a comprehensive overview of researcher responsibilities, guiding learners through the lifecycle of a research project. It takes 250 minutes to complete the 8 core modules. It also offers 6 optional modules, which take 165 minutes to complete.
It is recommended that UG and PGT students should complete modules 1 and 2 of the Full version (‘Responsible Research Practice’ and ‘Irresponsible Research Practice’) as a minimum.
All those involved in the delivery of research should complete the online Research Integrity training. The recommendations for which course you should complete are based on your experience and level of study/career stage:
UG and PGT students: complete modules 1 and 2 of the Full version (‘Responsible Research Practice’ and ‘Irresponsible Research Practice’)
PGR students: complete the Full version of the training (all 8 core modules)
ECRs: recommended to complete the Full version of the training (if not previously completed, otherwise complete the Refresher version)
Mid-career and experienced researchers and those who have previously completed RI training: complete the Refresher version
Anyone applying for ethical approval should also complete the supplementary ‘Research Involving Human Participants’ module. You will need to register for the Full version to access this course.
