Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020, the European Union's new Research & Innovation programme, started on 1 January 2014 and will last until 31 December 2020. With a budget of €70.2bn, Horizon 2020 is central to the EU's efforts to build "smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and jobs."
In policy terms, Horizon 2020 is designed to produce world-class science, to remove barriers to innovation and to make it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation. Accordingly, Horizon 2020 has three main 'pillars' each of which addresses these major policy objectives: Excellent Science features funding streams for researcher-led, 'bottom-up' projects; Industrial Leadership has a strong emphasis on innovation in key technologies with strong industrial involvement; Societal Challenges addresses seven major concerns of citizens and society through a challenge-based approach.
Horizon 2020 is open to everyone, with a simple structure that reduces red tape and time so participants can focus on what is really important. This approach makes sure new projects get off the ground quickly – and achieve results faster.
