Research Contracts Framework

Research Contracts Framework

About the Framework

As part of the Research Enabling Services Warwick Transformation Programme, we listened to your feedback about providing transparency and clarity regarding research contracting.

We are pleased to share that Research & Impact Services has developed a Research Contracts Framework to provide you with a useful tool to navigate the process of contract development, as well as guidance on how to approach conversations with funders and industry partners regarding contracting.

The framework consists of a series of webpages with information on what contracts are used for in research and research-related activity, outlining the different types of contracts the University can provide, the process for contracting, and the roles and responsibilities within this process.

How will the framework benefit you?

For Academics and Researchers:

  • Clarity and guidance – a clear understanding of the contracting process clarifies timelines and associated processes, reducing unforeseen delays

  • Protection of work – intellectual property rights, publication freedoms, and research integrity can be better safeguarded.
  • Improved collaboration– setting clear expectations with external collaborators based on a clear understanding of the process ensures smoother partnerships.
  • Training and support – opportunities for contract-related training and guidance to strengthen understanding of the process and any complicating factors.

For Departments:

  • Streamlined processes – a structured approach to research contracts reduces administrative burden and creates more self-serve support on common contracts clarifications.

  • Better risk management – clearer guidance on compliance with legal, financial and funder requirements through common understanding protects the University’s interests and reputation and helps to keep researchers/research safe.

  • Efficient communication – improved coordination between departments, researchers and external partners minimises misunderstandings and enhance working relationships.

For External Partners:
  • Clear expectations – understanding of Warwick’s contracting approach and academic priorities helps facilitate agreements.
  • Stronger relationships – establishing transparent and fair terms through a positive, collaborative development process fosters long-term relationships.

Alongside this work, R&IS is establishing a specialist contracts team designed to improve the support you receive in getting contracts in place, whilst minimising delays.
