About the Researcher

I have just finished my degree in English and Comparative Literatures, and am looking forward to taking my studies further in the form of this research project. I am particularly interested in systems of global literatures, and literary and cultural theory, which I will be combining with my interest in photography.

About this Project

My research partner and I aim to investigate the relationship between two key works of the novelist Jorge Amado and the cityscape of Salvador, Brazil. We are particularly interested in how the novels Jubiaba (1935) and The Tent of Miracles (1969), written at very different moments in Brazil's contemporary history, comment of the Afro-Brazilian history of the city and its subsequent development. This research will take the form of a photographic and illustrative exhibition alongside interviews with individuals in the city who are closely tied to Amado's work, all of which will be exhibited upon our return.
