Development Goal 1

Complete this when you have achieved your researcher development goal 1.

What was the objective you set yourself?

I set myself the objective to research quantitative research methods, for a representative sample of interview participants.

What actions did you take to achieve it?

I contacted the Sociology department of the university where I'm doing my research, they told me that there was no time for a quantitative survey: that I should concentrate my efforts on qualitative research. I shared this with my supervisor, who explained that this was probably because there was no time to obtain a statistically significant sample.

I contacted the census people. I realised that I would not have time to obtain a sample - further, even had I, it may not have been bias-free. I opted for ethonograpic researc, which might be made be self-reflexive through the medium of poetry.

I spoke to the food studies institution of Coventry University who directed me to a gap in research on what people eat from thier point of view.

How do you know you have achieved your goal?

I know why I do not have a frame - I invite who has time to talk to me, although I have tried to tackle workers at important local landmarks such as a bank, a library, the local radio station, and a leader of the local neighbour hood watch. To make sure that the qualitative part compensates for this, I ensure representability by recoding and refelcting on my trail through a diary of thoughts on writing the recipe poems, and refelctions of the interveiws in which they are written.

What new or existing skills have you developed as a result of achieving this objective?

I learnt from reading about different methodologies that projects are most effective if they are are informed by practical constraints. That way, there is a better chance they will address the problems which they aim to solve. In the light of that, I have learnt not to be afraid of mixing methods if it seems like the right thing to do.

How will these support your research project, studies or career?

I have a greater understanding of the concept of representability

If you were to set yourself the same objective again, what would you do differently?

I would read the literature around the subject first: I found some helpful books which explained how one might best design an holistic research project
