Initial Intentions
This research project interests me due to its theoretical nature. I have always wanted to see how pure mathematics and physics can work together synergistically, and now I have this opportunity to do so.
Hopefully I will be able to make some headway into describing skyrmions and their dynamics in terms from a geometrical point of view. As far as I know, this has not been done before yet; my supervisor's paper that proposes a method of doing this was published only in March 2016.
I would like to become more proficient at reading scientific literature/articles. As many articles are not self-contained this is much harder than it sounds, yet will be invaluable to me as I will have to use such a skill to produce my dissertation next year.
It has been observed that skyrmions can depin from their lattice structure when an electric current 10^5 times weaker than those needed in ferromagnetic domain walls, which is the type of magnetic order used in present-day information devices. What this means is that magnetic skyrmions may offer a novel way to develop spintronic/logic devices.
