What is a Body Pump class?

A Body Pump™ class is a group strength and endurance-based class that targets the whole body with a range of strength-based exercises.

We’re not talking lifting your heaviest weight and resting. This is finding the right weight to lift over high repetitions to set routines.

Led by a class instructor, you will be guided through a variety of lifts and pulls using a barbell or weighted plates, powered by an energetic and motivating soundtrack that sets the pace.

Do I need to be strong to do a Body Pump class?

One of the benefits of a Body Pump workout is you can adapt it to your level. You can add and remove weighted plates from your bar throughout the workout, adapting it as you go.

Ready to pump it harder? Add more weights to your bar. Finding things a little difficult? Simply remove weights or lose them completely and focus on the movements. You can adapt your workout throughout the class and work at your level, but with the encouragement of a group-led class.

What exercises are done in a Body Pump class?

The movements and lifts used in Body Pump exercises work all the major muscle groups in your body to give a complete workout:

  • squats
  • deadlifts
  • chest presses
  • bicep curls
  • upright rows
  • clean and press
  • lunges
  • shoulder presses

Do I need to know these exercises to attend a class?

No, the class instructor will lead the whole session, describe each movement and count you in for each exercise so you can focus on getting the best from your workout.

What are the benefits of Body Pump?

The main benefit of a Body Pump™ class is improving muscle endurance and getting a full body workout. Packed into a 60 minute workout you’ll be working all the major muscle groups including:

  • arms and shoulders
  • chest
  • back
  • legs and glutes
  • core

The fast pace and high repetitions of each exercise also means you’ll be raising your heart rate and burning calories as you get the double benefits of resistance training and cardio conditioning.

What do I need to bring to a Body Pump workout?

You don’t need to bring any special equipment to a Body Pump class. Comfy exercise clothes and some water to stay hydrated is all you need. Optional extras you may want to bring include a towel and your own workout mat.

Weights, steppers and workout mats will all be provided in the class.

Are there any other classes like Body Pump?

There are a range of other strength and endurance classes, such as Body Combat™ and Body Attack™ that offer similar workout benefits, so you can find the right kind of fitness class for you.
