What is the best age for a child to start swimming?
Swimming is one of the most important life skills, so help your child to feel safe and confident in the water early. You can start your child’s swimming lessons here at the Sports and Wellness Hub from ages 3+ where they can learn with others in a supportive environment.
How do I encourage my child to swim?
Even if you’re not a passionate swimmer yourself, there are still lots of ways you can encourage your child to swim. Getting into the pool for the first time can seem scary to children, so reassure them and keep close. Once you’ve established water safety, you can highlight the excitement and appeal of being in the water using fun floats and toys to help children see the water as another opportunity for play!
What do I need to bring for my child’s first swimming lesson?
Make sure to bring the essentials! You can prep for your toddler’s first swimming lesson with a towel, a pair of well-fitting goggles, and a swimming costume. If your child has long hair, it’s a good idea to bring along something to safely tie it back. Pool floats will be provided for your child’s lessons.
What basic swimming skills will my child learn during their first lessons?
Through their first swimming lessons, your child will learn fundamental skills to help them stay safe around water and enjoy their time in the pool.
You will meet the swimming instructors who will take your child through all the basic swimming skills. These include pool rules, getting in and out safely, moving in the water (where they can practice the classic ‘doggy paddle’ or try kicking through the water with floats), and controlling their breath. All this will help build confidence in the water. You can find out more about what children learn by looking through the swimming stages.
Why is learning to swim hard?
Learning to swim can feel intimidating due to the strange environment of being in the water, but introducing your child to swimming at a young age can help support this step. It’s natural for them to feel nervous or excited for their first outing to the pool! Make sure to give plenty of encouragement and reassurance through their first experiences swimming to help grow their confidence.
What are the health benefits of swimming for children?
Like for adults, kids can experience a lot of health benefits by swimming. Getting active in the pool can improve cardiovascular health, strength, and stamina. Due to working against the resistance of the water, swimming can be pretty tiring for children!
Through swimming lessons, your child can also meet others and make new friends, so it’s not just a fun physical activity but a social one too.
