Your vote matters
The UK General Election is taking place on 4 July 2024, to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons. The deadline for registering to vote in the General Election is by 11:59pm on 18 June 2024.
Find out if you are eligible to vote
To vote in the General Election, you must:
- be registered to vote
- be 18 or over on the day of the election (‘polling day’)
- be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
- be resident at an address in the UK or living abroad and registered as an overseas voter
- not be legally excluded from voting

Voting by post
If you wish to vote by post at your non-term time home address, you must return your postal vote to your home local council's electoral services team as per the instructions you'll find with the postal voting form.
You need to re-register each time you change your address. So, even if you registered to vote in the last election, you must re-register to vote if you have moved house since. If you are unsure whether you've registered at your new address, check and update your details here.
If you want to apply for a postal vote online, you must apply by 5pm on 19 June 2024.
If you want to apply for a postal vote by post, you must get your postal vote application to your local Electoral Registration Office by 5pm on 19 June 2024.
Voting by proxy
If you’re unable to vote in person, you can ask someone to vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote.
Your proxy should be someone you trust to vote on your behalf. You’ll need to tell them which candidate (or referendum outcome) you want to vote for.
If you want to apply for your proxy vote online, you must apply by 5pm on 26 June 2024.
If you want to apply for your proxy vote by post, you must get your proxy vote application to your local Electoral Registration Office by 5pm on 19 June 2024.
Find your local polling station
When you vote in person, you will go to the polling station allocated to you based on your address on the electoral register.
Before you go to vote, check where your local polling station is. It might not be the closest one to where to where you live, and it might have changed since the last time you voted.Your polling station will be on your poll card, which you'll receive through the post a few weeks before polling day.
For those who will be on campus in July, if you have registered to vote using your address on campus, there will be two polling stations in the Social Sciences Building: one for Coventry Council and one for Warwick District Council. All polling stations will be open from 7am – 10pm on 4 July 2024.
Photo ID required
This year, a form of photo ID will be required for you to vote in person. Accepted forms of ID include:
- UK, European Economic Area (EEA), or Commonwealth passport
- UK, EEA, or Commonwealth driver’s license
- Some concessionary travel passes
If you don’t have one of the accepted forms of ID, you can apply for free ID online or complete a paper form before 5pm on 26 June 2024. You will need to provide a photo, full name, date of birth, the address at which you are registered to vote, and your National Insurance number.
