A number of students and colleagues have expressed interest in supporting One Day Without Us, a national day of action to celebrate the contribution migrants make in the UK.
National organisers have called for a single unifying action to take place at 1pm. Participants in communities across the UK are invited to link arms or hold up placards to show their support, and to share this moment via social media. At Warwick, there will be a gathering in the Piazza at this time. Please come and join us from 12.30, and support via social media using #1daywithoutus.
Warwick is, and is determined to continue to be, an outward-facing and international institution, across all our activities, community and values. Our region is home to a great many global companies and talented people from around the world. Our University community is made up of a diverse range of international students and staff who not only contribute to our teaching, learning, research and campus experience, but also to the economy, social fabric, and cultural life of the region, and go on to become global ambassadors for the city and region.
This is just one way in which Warwick seeks to celebrate and support our diverse community. We have recently been ranked as one of the most international universities. We offer wellbeing, diversity and inclusion support and guidance for all staff and students through a range of services, advice and the SU Are You OK campaign. And, just this month, we have hosted a Universities of Sanctuary event to celebrate universities welcoming asylum seekers and refugees into their community and fostering a culture of welcome and inclusion. We are celebrating LGBT History Month, and we are exploring through Creative Warwick how we engage the local community with the many creative things our diverse range of student societies do on campus. We're partnering with the Tate to hold a ‘Who are we’ exhibition in March, looking at what it means to belong, across and within borders.
There are also events taking place elsewhere in the region. On Saturday 18 February, a community event to promote the vision of One Day Without Us will take place in Kenilworth town centre, with shops and businesses participating. There will be face painting and live music in Talisman Square. There are also events linked to the day of action at Coventry Cathedral.
