WP at Warwick News

Since 2016, Warwick has been one of 13 partner universities in the Sutton Trust's UK Summer School Programme, which has involved running a summer school for approximately 120 students from under-represented groups in higher education.

The participants are from all over the UK and stay on our campus for 5 days to experience what being a student at Warwick is like. They attend taster lectures in a subject of their choice and learn about the UCAS process. They meet our students and take part in a variety of fun activities, which has included an It's a Knockout afternoon and society tasters.

This year, due to the lockdown and social distancing rules, the Sutton Trust gave us the opportunity to join them in a new venture, meaning we would still be able to host our summer school but in a virtual environment, via the Sutton Trust Online Platform.

The Outreach and Widening Participation team works with schools and students from under-represented groups in higher education from primary age to Year 13 and onwards. Since the school closures, our team has explored new ways to carry out our crucial work for the community and the university. Here is a snapshot of what we have been up to with our Year 12 and Year 10 students.

We wanted to confirm that the opportunity to present at the International Conference of Undergraduate Research, on the 29-30^th September 2020, is still open to you and that the conference, and therefore the current Call for Abstracts, is still going ahead.

The format of the conference may vary depending on the circumstances in each country at the time, but ICUR is a virtual conference at its essence, and we are confident that we can proceed to deliver the conference to a high standard. We encourage you not to miss out on participating.

Abstracts are submitted via our online portal at icurportal.com where more information on the conference and our international partners can also be found.

The deadline for abstract submission of 250 words is 31^st May 2020 – we look forward to reading yours!

Our latest WP Impact Report for 2018 has just been published. Thank you to the WP Research and Evaluation Team for providing all of the data, and to everyone who has been involved with the programmes, events and activities that we have been able to run. Read it here now.

Our Student Progression Team Launches kick off this week in local schools. The SPT programme places University of Warwick Mentors in schools with small groups of year 8 and 9 pupils. Through a variety of interactive and engaging group sessions, mentors build a rapport with the pupils and support them to aim high and work hard to achieve their future goals.

We hope the sessions go well, and look forward to the next 7 mentoring sessions!
