Purpose
We are committed to developing recommendations and guidance as well as sharing experiences and good practices in the field of the Pedagogy of Public and Community Engagement across departments at Warwick. We value the integration of public engagement in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PGT) curricula to encourage students to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom, alongside PGR development activities.
Our activities focus on supporting colleagues interested in developing teaching materials, creating new or revised modules, and initiating teaching approaches that incorporate public and community engagement. We are also interested in the (inter)disciplinary nature of some of the work on public engagement pedagogies and reflect on the overlaps that may exist between different areas
This is a joint Learning Circle run in collaboration with Warwick International Higher Education Academy (WIHEA).
If you'd like to be part of our meetings please sign up to be a WIE Member to be emailed when meetings are scheduled. These termly meetings are forums for discussion and best practice sharing. There may also be opportunities to join task and finish groups focussed on driving forward particular streams of work that happen outside of the meetings.
You can also view upcoming events for all Learning Circles on this page. The core focus of the LC is set by our Steering Group. WIE Fellows interested in joining the Steering Group should see the steering group code of conduct to understand the commitment involved and contact wie@warwick.ac.uk to express their interest.
Our work so far
Our Learning Circle has steadily advanced the Pedagogy of Public and Community Engagement (PCE) across Warwick through collaborative projects, resource development, and the embedding of engagement-focused teaching practices.
Since 2021, we have mapped where public engagement appears in modules across the university, creating an understanding of where Public and Community Engagement are being taught across Warwick. This work also informed the development of materials for the APP TE programme, introducing colleagues to integrating engagement into their teaching and highlighting the benefits for students’ learning and development.
Throughout 2022, we extended this cataloguing work and explored how public engagement could be recognised within module approval processes. We deepened our examination of existing examples of practice and began developing alternative pedagogical approaches relevant to teaching public engagement. We also contributed resources to the WIE Skills Festival to support colleagues looking to embed engagement in their modules.
In 2023–24, we broadened our focus to university‑wide capacity building. We shared recommendations, good practice, and guidance on PCE pedagogy, supported colleagues new to this area. A key milestone was our co‑creation workshop at the WIE Conference 2024, where we collaboratively developed principles and strategies for integrating public engagement into higher‑education teaching.
Most recently, in 2024–25, we continued facilitating knowledge exchange through contributions to the Digital Pedagogies Library and the WIE Conference 2025. We strengthened the integration of PCE pedagogies into teaching, learning, and assessment, contributed to discussions on ethics and inclusion in engagement practice, and began establishing a wider network to connect staff and students interested in this field.
Our work so far demonstrates a sustained commitment to enhancing public and community engagement across the university through collaboration, pedagogy, and shared practice.
