The FAB Project

The FAB project was birthed during the summer holiday of the 2020/21 academic year. The project was run by two students, Demi and Kate, who are both students of the Faculty of Arts. The purpose of the project was to raise awareness and excitement surrounding the new Faculty of Arts Building (FAB) for incoming students, current students and staff members. Alongside this objective, the project has aimed to create an inclusive and vibrant student culture that will inhabit the building from September 2021.  

It has been a challenging year for all students and staff due to the everchanging Covid-19 restrictions; with this in mind Demi and Kate have decided to also consider the struggles students and staff may encounter whilst transferring from virtual learning to face-to-face learning. The project looks to understand the perception students have about returning to face-to-face learning and the relationship this has to the perception of the new building.

The FAB Timeline

  • September 2021 University of Warwick students return to campus for the new academic year. The FAB is nearing completion and the finishing touches are being put on the building.
  • August 2021The FAB project is underway. Check out the resources to the left of this page.
  • June - August 2021 Sees staff and student tours commence to see progress on the new building. A student intern project is launched by the Faculty DSEPs to support the move into the building from the student perspective.
  • 17 May 2021 Reopening continues and more staff are able to visit campus and see the progress made on the new building. Plans begin to be put in place for packing up across the summer.
  • March - April 2021 The country begins to reopen. Courses with a laboratory or practice element are able to resume teaching towards the end of Term 2.
  • 4 January 2021 Third Covid 19 national lockdown.
  • 19 - 30 December 2020 The Prime Minister cancels Christmas travel and 80% of the country moves into Tier 4.
  • November 2020 A socially distanced, limited new building Topping Out Ceremony is held.
  • End October - 2 December 2020 Second Covid 19 national lockdown. Seminar and practice teaching continues for Arts.
  • September 2020 Term 1 of the new academic year starts, but the work from home guidance is still operating. 2 metres social distancing and mask wearing is in operation for teaching and learning. Progress on the building continues.
  • July - August 2020 Opening up and a chance to see the progress on the new building.
  • 20 March - 23 June 2020 Dates of the first UK Covid 19 lockdown. The Faculty monitors progress on the new building using the timelapse camera situated on the Oculus and through reports to the PPG.
  • March 2020 The floor of level 2 is now visible from the Oculus.
  • January 2020 The mezzanine floor of the building is now clearly visible from the 1st floor of the Oculus.
  • November 2019 Commencement ceremony held in what will be the atrium of the new building. Classics staff and students perform a libation to the 9 Muses, Apollo and the Gods. A time capsule is buried in the base of the new building.
  • May 2019 Hoardings go up around Car Park 7 and on the 8 May demolition finally starts!
  • July 2018 The University goes out to tender for the construction and delivery of the new building
  • July - November 2017 RIBA Stage 2 consultation and design planning takes place. These consultations with all stakeholders dig more deeply into aspects of the overall design and operations of the building
  • February 2017 Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) win the RIBA competition to design the new building
  • October 2016 An international RIBA competition opens for the design of the new Faculty of Arts Building
  • July 2016 University Council approves a provisional budget for the construction of a new Faculty of Arts Building
