QQ39 BA in English and Classical Civilisation, for students entering in 2023/24 onwards

Three years full-time study leading to the degree of BA (Honours) or BA (Pass) in English and Classical Civilisation QQ39.

Degree credits weighting: Year 1: 0%, Year 2: 50%, Year 3: 50%

Year One

120 CATS: 60 CATS from Classics; 60 CATS from English. For progression to year 2, you must pass 90 CATS with an overall average of 40%, including passes in the required core and required optional core modules:

  • Required Core module (30 CATS): Modes of Reading (EN122-30)
  •  30 CATS from the English Department from the following optional core modules:

EITHER Medieval to Renaissance English Literature (EN121-30) OR Epic into Novel (EN101)

  •  30 CATS from the Classics & Ancient History Department from the following optional core modules:

Ancient Thought: Philosophy, Politics, Science (CX112-15) (term 1); Roman Culture and Society (CX110-15) (term 1); Greek Culture and Society (CX109-15) (term 1); Encounters with Greek Texts (CX113-15) (term 2); Encounters with Latin Texts (term 2).

Year Two

For progression from 2nd to final year: You must pass at least 90 Credits with an overall average of 40% or above, including passes in required optional core modules (30 CATS of English modules will contribute to your optional core modules).

Students study 120 CATS: 60 CATS from Classics; 60 CATS from English

  • Required Optional Core Module in Classics & Ancient History: 30 CATS of modules from List B.
  • 30 CATS of Optional Modules in Classics & Ancient History:
    • Modules can be selected from EITHER List A OR List B. Students may also choose CX251 Hellenistic World as an optional module in their second year. Modules available in 2022/23 are in BOLD.
  • 60 CATS of English modulesLink opens in a new window: students choose 60 CATS of English Literature pathway approved module from either List A or List B (of which 30 will form your optional core module), which combines distributional and optional modules available to English honours students on the English pathway. Note all modules are subject to availability, and to change, year on year.

Year Three

120 CATS, divided between modules run by the departments of Classics and English, with a minimum of 30 CATS from each department (i.e. CATS may be split 60-60, or 30-90 either way)

  • Required Core module, CX303 or EN320: dissertation (30 CATS) under the supervision of a member of staff in either the Classics or the English department.
  • Required Optional Core Module in Classics & Ancient History: 30 CATS of modules from List B.
  • 60 CATS of optional modules in any combination of English and Classics: students may choose at least 30 CATS of Classics honours modules from the list here, and at least 30 CATS from the English module/s from the list hereLink opens in a new window.
