Organisation

There are weekly sessions on Tuesdays at 11am–1pm in H0.58, beginning in week 2 of term 1. The lectures are designed to explore key topics raised by the plays, and to highlight the problems involved in the reading and interpretation of literature from a culture which is both ancient and alien, but which still speaks to us in the modern world.

Students will need to read the relevant plays before each lecture, and lectures will be based on the assumption that you have done so. You will also be expected to participate in discussion of relevant issues that arise during the lecture sessions, especially in compulsory seminars which will be devoted to close-reading and literary interpretation of important, difficult, or controversial passages.
