Receptions of Antiquity: East and West
CX211-30/CX311-30
The central objective of the module is to encourage students to engage with a broad range of primary and secondary sources that are not usually covered in a traditional curriculum, and familiarise themselves with contemporary debates related to the constitution of what is now called ‘Classics’.
We shall explore the way in which Ancient literature, philosophy and visual art were culturally received, transmitted, revived and re-appropriated throughout the ages from Byzantium to Europe. We will study ancient texts and images and their cultural reception in the medieval and early modern periods. We will examine the reception of texts in a variety of historical and ideological contexts, and reflect on specific problems of methods and approaches inherent to the constitution of the discipline of Classics.
This module will take place on Monday, 1-3pm in H.3.44 (Term 1) and 3.41 (Terms 2 and 3)
Module Convenor: Dr Maude Vanhaelen
Module Lecturers: Dr Caroline Petit and Dr Maude Vanhaelen.
