The Sutton Trust Summer Schools are free, subject-specific residential courses for Year 12/Lower Sixth (or S5 in Scotland or equivalent) students from UK state-maintained schools. The summer schools are designed to provide academically-able students from non-privileged backgrounds with the opportunity to experience life at a leading university.

The summer school programme on offer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at The University of Warwick promises an innovative and stimulating insight into the value of studying Classics and/or Ancient History at university. We aim to inspire and develop a passion for the study of the Ancient World and its continuing relevance to the modern day.

As well as the opportunity to experience the ancient languages at the appropriate level (beginners included), participants will be exposed to ancient history, philosophy, literature, art and architecture, sexuality and gender studies, mythology, religion, and ancient medicine, thus illustrating the breadth of the discipline and its multi-faceted appeal. Students will also discover the influence of the Classical Civilisations on even the most modern visual media. Moreover, the course will provide the opportunity to handle coins and artefacts from our departmental collections.

In this way, we plan to offer an exciting introduction to Classics at university level for those who have a fundamental interest in the subject but have not had the opportunity to study it before; as well as push those who have studied Classics to go beyond the traditional school syllabus.
