Japanese 3 for language degree students (LL2A6)_20-21

Summary

Level:

This module is offered to language degree students who are intermediate year and who have completed LL2A5 or LL2C1.

 

Main Objectives:

It will offer continuity of learning for those who have completed the second level module and an opportunity for those with a reasonable amount of prior knowledge to work at an appropriate level to further develop their knowledge of the language.

Credits:

This module offers 30 credits.

Teaching:

Our aim, Covid-19 arrangements permitting, is online teaching for 21 weeks, which will include:

  • Asynchronous pre-recorded videos (accessible through Moodle, to be studied before the synchronous session)
  • 90-minute online synchronous (live) session (small group) via Teams

There is also a weekly culture hour (online).

 

Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore the expected amount of study over the course of this module is 300 hours. 10 hours of study a week on average will be required including independent study.

 
Assessment:

Term 1 - Interim test

Term 3 - One reading/writing test + one speaking test

Please note that Term 1 interim test is scheduled to take place on Saturday 12 December 2020

Course Description:

This module aims to develop communicative competence further in various social and work contexts. Students will learn to express themselves reasonably well in familiar situations to meet different purposes.Students will also gain insights into social manners and customs in Japan. An additional 140 kanji will be introduced.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module, students shoule be able to:

  • General: Carry out communicative tasks in various common social situations, expressing their views, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary.
  • Reading: Understand straight forward texts and letters / stories written with some Kanji.
  • Writing: Produce straight forward detailed descriptions on a range of common or/ and personal subjects.
  • Speaking: express feelings and opinions, express thoughts on abstract and cultural topics, and exchange information on familiar topics.
  • Listening: Understand conversations or monologues on familiar topics, such as hobbies, leisure, life style, young people in which some detailed explanations are given with some opinions.
