About us
Welcome to our School
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is a close-knit community with a reputation for innovative teaching and excellent research. The School comprises five major language sections - French, German, Italian, Hispanic Studies and Translation and Transcultural Studies as well as a Language Centre offering linguistic training in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Russian.
Our academics, teachers, and support staff provide a world-class student experience. We offer a wide range of flexible undergraduate courses, allowing students to study up to 3 of our 9 languages. You can begin up to two new languages as part of a degree here, while deepening your understanding of language(s) and cultures you've studied before.
The School has over 120 members of staff teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; colleagues have a wide range of expertise in subjects including language, translation studies, literary studies, cinema and visual cultures, history, and politics. Our undergraduate modules and taught postgraduate degrees reflect this breadth of expertise.
We’re proud to foster a culture of learning that extends well beyond the classroom, through research seminars, extra-curricular activities, educational visits, and social events. Why not visit us on campus to learn more?
