Above and Below the Line: Women's Labour in Postwar Italian Cinema

The exhibition project Above and Below the Line: Women’s Labour in Postwar Italian Cinema opened at the Cineteca di Bologna in June 2025 and ran until May 2026. It explored the careers of six women: two who worked in creative roles - screenwriter Suso Cecchi d’Amico and documentary filmmaker Cecilia Mangini - and four whose work was primarily technical or organisational: Mara Blasetti (assistant director and production manager), Isa Bartalini (assistant director and casting director), Anna Gruber (production collaborator), and Anna Baldacci (set photographer). The exhibition highlighted that, despite the essential contributions these women made to the production process, they were often confined to “below-the-line” roles - positions that, while crucial to the making of films, have traditionally received less recognition than their creative “above-the-line” counterparts.
