About
Oscar Mealia holds a BA in English and Creative Writing (2014) from the University of Westminster, an MA in Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths, the University of London (2015) and a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Birmingham (2023). Their doctoral thesis: ‘Inhuman, All Too Inhuman: Lyotard, Nihilism and Film’, was an exploration of film vis-à-vis Jean-François Lyotard's notions of the inhuman, acinema and the libidinal, crucially through a portfolio of experimental films they created. More broadly, their practice-led research focuses on alternative approaches to film, theory, the moving-image and pedagogy. Outside of academia, they are an exhibited multimedia artist, composer and filmmaker under the moniker Oscar Vinter.
Previously, Oscar lectured at the University of Birmingham, delivering the undergraduate module Film Genre and the Postgraduate modules, Documentary Filmmaking and Research Skills in Film and Television.
