Warwick Sutton Scholars 2021: Food and sustainable development

Vegetables including kale, peppers, and butternut squash lined up on supermarket shelves

Warwick Sutton Scholars is a two-year programme for Year 8 and 9 students from under-represented backgrounds in higher education across the West Midlands. Coordinated by Warwick's Widening Participation and Outreach team, the aim of the programme is to inspire students to consider university as an option for the future.

The Year 9 programme is run in collaboration with the GSD Department. Due to the pandemic, this year the programme was run entirely online, with more (shorter) events. The participants worked in groups on a research project titled 'Every Plate Tells a Story', aimed at addressing a problem linked to food and sustainable development. They established a research question, conducted primary research (surveys), and designed an intervention aimed at tackling the problem.

Congratulations to the winners of the Global Sustainable Development Competition!

Each year we run the Global Sustainable Development Competition. This is an exciting opportunity for school students in year 11 and 12 (aged between 15 and 17 years) to think creatively and gain valuable research skills as they learn more about global sustainable development. In the five years that we have run the competition, this year we have received the highest number of entries yet!

A look back on this year's Warwick Sutton Scholars Year 9 scheme

Warwick Sutton Scholars is a two-year programme for highly able Year 8 and 9 students from under-represented backgrounds in higher education across the West Midlands. The aim of the programme, coordinated by Maria Kehr (Widening Participation and Outreach team), is to inspire students to consider university as an option for the future.

The Year 9 programme is run in collaboration with our Department. The programme consists of a two-day residential and several campus days, culminating with a graduation event.

The GSD team involved in the programme this year included two GSD student ambassadors, Hana Chua (final-year single honours GSD student) and Marina Zorila (final-year Economic Studies and GSD student), working under the guidance of Dr Marta Guerriero, Associate Professor in GSD, to design and deliver the academic content of the programme. GSD student ambassador Elizabeth Disdel (second-year Philosophy and GSD student) was also involved in one of the campus days.

Year 12* competition: Entry now open

Each year, the Global Sustainable Development (GSD) Department at the University of Warwick runs a competition for year 12* students. The competition was established to engage with talented school students and give insight into the type of thought-provoking issues involved in studying GSD at Warwick.

This is an exciting opportunity for students to think creatively and gain valuable research skills as they learn more about global sustainable development. Since it was established, we have expanded the types of entries that can be submitted to include videos, podcasts and poetry, as well as more traditional essay responses. This is in line with our overall aim to engage with students from a variety of different backgrounds and interests, giving them the chance to present their unique perspectives on issues of global sustainable development.

Entry for the 2020 year 12* competition is now open. Entries must be received by midnight (UK time) on Friday 10 April 2020.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to a Campus Day at Warwick on Saturday 27 June 2020 with GSD students and teaching staff. Winners will be announced and awarded prizes.

To find out more about the competition, how to enter and look at past entries, please see here.
