The World PhD Students Sustainability Summit 2022 was organised by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research, the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme, and the European Alliance for Sustainability Research Rationale. Applications are now open for our PhD scholarships in Global Sustainable Development (GSD) for the academic year 2022/23. The Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarships Programme, ‘TRANSFORM: Transformations of Human-Environment Interactions to Sustainable Development’, is led by the GSD Department in the School for Cross-faculty Studies.
Applications close at 12 pm (GMT) on Monday 7 March 2022.

We are delighted to announce that Hala Alhaffir, a MASc in Global Sustainable Development offer holder, has been successful in securing two prestigious international scholarships to enable her to take up a place on our new programme. Hala will be jointly funded by Chevening and the Saïd Foundation. A Chevening Scholarship ‘enables outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK’. The Saïd Foundation scholarships are ‘targeted towards outstanding individuals with leadership potential who will be drivers of positive change’.
We spoke to Hala to find out more about her background and her plans for the future.
- New PhD scholarships in Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick available to UK and EU students, thanks to £1,350,000 from Leverhulme Trust
- Scholars will receive transdisciplinary training: expertise from different academic faculties, as well as mentorship from front line organisations, such as UN Habitat
- Researchers will be trained to be "as comfortable analysing data on human-environment interactions as liaising with governments and empowering communities" -- Professor João Porto de Albuquerque
