Congratulations to all our Masters students on their graduation and good luck with their PhD research and careers!
Summer Graduation Congratulations
Eight of our Complexity students were awarded their research degrees at the recent graduation ceremony: Neil Jenkins, Ellen Webborn, Rob Eyre, Liz Buckingham-Jeffery, Janis Klaise (pictured left to right), Jen Jackson, Stamatios Katsikas and Joel Nicholls. Congratulations to all of them and our very best wishes for the future!
ANNUAL RETREAT 2018 - LAKE DISTRICT
On the 1st of May 2018, all members of the MathSys Centre travelled to the Lake District for the annual retreat. We spent four great days in the YHA Hawkshead with beautiful views, inspirational talks and nice company.
COMPLEXITY 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
This year marked the tenth intake of students to the two doctoral training centres associated to the Warwick Centre for Complexity Science. To mark the milestone, a special event was held at The Shard in London, organised by Colm Connaughton and Martine Barons.
Winter Graduation 2018
Congratulations to our third MathSys cohort who graduated from their Masters programme on the of 17th January 2018. The Winter Graduation Ceremony also saw Gwilym Enstone, Edward Hill and Diana Khoromskaia awarded their PhDs. In addition to the official University proceedings, there was also a congratulatory lunch celebration in the Centre where family, friends and staff joined the students in celebrating their success.
Analysing a neglected tropical disease in rural Bihar
Our second-year PhD student Tim Pollington is currently in India for four months as part of the Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme delivered by the British Council.
Final Adieu to Warwick
After working at the University of Warwick for 3 years, Sam Johnson is leaving the Complexity Centre to take up a permanent position at the University of Birmingham. We wish him the best of luck at his new position! Here is his reflection on his time at the Centre.
Complexity Summer Graduation
Congratulations to our new PhD graduates: Dr Tom Rafferty, Dr Michael Maitland, Dr Peter Dawson, Dr Bernd Taschler, Dr Federico Botta and Dr Yuri Lifanov! Most of them have started work either as postdocs or in the commercial sector and we wish them all the best in their careers!
Postgraduate Research Showcase 2017
Congratulations to Sophie Meakin for winning the Faculty of Science prize and best overall poster prize, and to Cameron Lack for winning the runner-up prize at the poster competition of the Postgraduate Research Showcase 2017, University of Warwick. Tim Pollington was a finalist in the Three Minute Thesis competition talking about visceral leishmaniasis. Well done to all of them!
Complexity does Retreat
This year students and staff of the Centre for Complexity went to Ravenstor in beautiful Peak District for the annual retreat.
Congratulations to Sami Al-Izzi on his success at BAMC!
Congratulations to Sami Al-Izzi for winning the runner-up prize for his poster on osmotic instabilities and organelle biogenesis, which he presented at the British Applied Mathematics Colloquium hosted by the University of Surrey.
Winter Graduation 2017
Congratulations to our second MathSys cohort who graduated from their Masters programme on 20th January. Dario Papavassiliou and Leigh Robinson were awarded their PhDs, and the last cohort of Erasmus Mundus Masters in Complex Systems Science students were awarded their degrees from both Warwick and our partner institutions: Ecole Polytechnique, Paris and Gothenburg and Chalmers Universities in Gothenburg. Many students came over from various parts of the world: Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Kazakhstan and Rwanda, to be at the ceremony. In addition to the official University proceeding, there was also a congratulatory lunch celebration in the Centre where family and friends joined the students in celebrating their success.
MathSys student's success at Hackathon
Our alumnus, Peter De Ford, just returned from CERN, where he participated in a three-day humanitarian hackathon called The Port (14-16 October).
Complexity at CCS 2016
Entering its thirteenth year, the annually held Conference on Complex Systems (CCS) returned to Europe this year with Amsterdam being the host venue. The 2016 edition of this international conference was attended by over 750 delegates, including a contingent of student and staff members from the Centre, to discuss the latest developments in complex systems and interdisciplinary science.
Complexity Summer Graduation
Graduating PhD students travelled back to Warwick from Hong Kong, the USA and the local area to participate in their graduation ceremony last week. We congratulate Dr Tom Machon, Dr Ben Collyer, Dr Adam Miller and Dr Yu-Xi Chau on their achievement. All four have started work either as postdocs or in the commercial sector (for full details see here) and we wish them well. Yuping (Iris) Ren graduated from the Erasmus Mundus Masters in Complex Systems Science and is now a PhD student working on music informatics and modelling at the University of Rochester, NY where she has won several awards and funding.
Congratulations to Tom Machon and Davide Michieletto for winning the Faculty of Science PhD Thesis Prizes!
Congratulations to Tom Machon (supervisor Dr Gareth Alexander) and Davide Michieletto (supervisor Professor Matthew Turner) who have been awarded the Faculty of Science PhD Thesis Prizes for their research on Aspects of Geometry and Topology in Liquid Crystalline Phases, and Topological Interactions in Ring Polymers, respectively. Tom is now a postdoc with Randy Kamien at UPenn, and Davide is a postdoc with Davide Marenduzzo at the University of Edinburgh. The Centre wishes them all the best in their careers!
The Dynamics of Complex Systems: A meeting in honour of the 60th birthday of Robert MacKay FRS
Last month leading researchers from around the world came to Warwick for a three-day meeting in honour and celebration of the 60th birthday of the Centre for Complexity Science’s Director, Prof Robert MacKay FRS.

First MathSys Masters graduates and Complexity Graduation
Congratulations to our first MathSys cohort who graduated from their Masters programme. Standards were high: eleven received distinctions and three were awarded a merit. Daniel Sprague and Davide Michieletto were awarded their PhDs and the 2013-15 Erasmus Mundus Masters in Complex Systems Science students were awarded their degrees from both Warwick and our partner institutions: Ecole Polytechnique, Paris and Gothenburg and Chalmers Universities in Gothenburg. Several students came over from Europe and one student even flew from South Africa to be at the ceremony and lunch celebration in the Centre. Many family and friends joined the students in celebrating their success.
