Using AI to support reading language

Using AI to Support Reading Comprehension in Advanced Language Learning

Step 1: Identify the Learning Need

  • Recognized students needed help preparing for a reading comprehension test.
  • Initial plan: teach students how to use AI tools for preparation.

Step 2: Understand the Assessment Format

  • Discovered the test was open-book and online, which changed the focus.
  • Shifted the goal from training on AI tools to creating targeted learning resources using AI.

Step 3: Use Curriculum as a Foundation

  • Referred to the learning curriculum to define:
  • Key topics
  • Vocabulary scope
  • Text types

Step 4: Generate Reading Material with AI

  • Used AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT / Copilot ) to:
  • Create advanced-level reading texts.
  • Ensure alignment with curriculum topics.

Step 5: Review and Edit Content

  • Carefully proofread AI-generated texts by the subject expert.
  • Edited for:
  • Accuracy
  • Relevance
  • Appropriate difficulty

Step 6: Design Reading Strategies

  • Developed guidance to help students:
  • Identify main ideas
  • Recognise key points and keywords
  • Apply comprehension techniques

Step 7: Create Multimedia Support

  • Used digital tools (e.g., text-to-speech or video generators) to:
  • Generate immersive video readings
  • Highlight text in sync with audio

Step 8: Add Language Support Features

  • Used AI tools (such as CapCut) to:
  • Provide English subtitles for video content
  • Remove non-essential information from the video

Step 9: Package as a Complete Resource

  • Combined the following elements:
  • Reading texts
  • Strategy guidance
  • Video/audio content
  • Language support materials

Step 10: Distribute to Students

  • Shared through:
  • VLE (e.g., Moodle)
  • Direct classroom use
  • Goal: The primary aim is to save students time and reduce their reliance on independently using AI for revision by supplying Warwick with bespoke resources designed to guide their exam preparation efficiently.
  • Ongoing Development: Annual review with the subject leader if necessary, and further exploration of using AI in teaching and learning.
